Development Studies PhD student Promise Ejiofor has won the Conflict Research Society's 2025 Cedric Smith Prize for his paper 'Gendercide and Terrorism Studies'. Promise's research explores incidents of gendercide against men and boys in Africa's Lake Chad region, arguing that the concept of gendercide should be expanded beyond its current focus on sexual violence.
The Conflict Research Society awards the annual Cedric Smith prize to the PhD candidate who authors the year’s best work of Peace and Conflict research. In previous years, the prize has been awarded to the authors of pieces on violence against civilians in Nigeria, the spread of civilian targeting in Iraq and peace negotiations.
