Centre of Development Studies

Dr Adam Branch (African Studies), Dr Jon Phillips (Development Studies) and colleagues have received funding from the British Academy for a new research project, Fuelling Violence to Fuelling Peace: Charcoal and Environmental Justice in East Africa.

The project asks how charcoal feeds into violence against landscapes and communities in East Africa, and how less violent political economies of charcoal might emerge. The project brings together a multi-disciplinary team from political science, gender studies, geography and ecology to address these enduring political questions.

The project is part of the British Academy programme on Heritage Dignity and Violence, funded through the Global Challenges Research Fund.
